WHAT IS A DENTAL SURGICAL GUIDE?
A dental surgical guide is a custom-made intraoral device fabricated from CBCT imaging data and STL scan files, designed to direct the surgical drill to the planned implant position with a defined depth, angle, and orientation.
The guide works through a sleeve system incorporated at each planned implant site, physically constraining the drill path and reducing the margin for deviation during the procedure.
Three main types are used clinically. A tooth-supported guide rests on remaining natural teeth for partially edentulous cases. A tissue-supported guide rests on the gum where no tooth support is available. A bone-supported guide is placed directly on exposed bone for fully edentulous cases.
Each guide is fabricated using digital design software and biocompatible 3D printed resin, safe for intraoral use across a comprehensive range of cases.
WHEN ARE SURGICAL GUIDES USED?
Surgical guides are used across a broad range of implant procedures where precision, predictability, and efficient surgical workflow are priorities.
A surgical guide may be indicated when:
• A single tooth implant requires careful angulation and depth control to achieve optimal positioning within a limited space
• A full arch All-on-X case involves multiple implants that must be placed consistently to support a fixed prosthetic arch with the correct load distribution
• Limited bone volume at the implant site makes freehand placement a greater clinical challenge, requiring a more controlled and evidence-based surgical approach
• A clinician wants to reduce chair time, streamline the surgical workflow, and minimise patient time under anaesthesia by following a pre-planned protocol
• A multidisciplinary team including a dentist, specialist, or oral surgeon requires a shared, documented treatment plan that can be implemented with confidence in the clinical environment
• Practices and surgical teams across New Zealand are seeking a reliable and innovative guide fabrication partner with a fast turnaround and consistent manufacturing standards
HOW IDD DENTAL LAB CREATES SURGICAL GUIDES
STEP 01:
Scan File Submission
The dental clinic or surgeon submits CBCT imaging data and STL scan files to iDD Dental Lab along with relevant case documentation. A preparation checklist is available on request.
STEP 02:
Digital Implant Planning
Our laboratory team carries out digital implant planning using specialist design software, assessing implant positions against available bone volume, anatomical structures, and the planned prosthetic outcome.
STEP 03:
Surgical Guide Design
The guide is designed around the planned implant sites with appropriate sleeve positioning. The guide type — tooth-supported, tissue-supported, or bone-supported — is determined from the clinical assessment provided.
STEP 04:
Fabrication Using 3D Printing
The guide is fabricated using biocompatible dental resin and high-accuracy 3D printing technology, producing a dimensionally accurate device suitable for precise guided implant surgery in a clinical setting.
STEP 05:
Post-Processing, Inspection, and Dispatch
Following printing, each guide is washed, cured, and inspected before dispatch with clear documentation. Turnaround time is confirmed at submission. Clinics should confirm their implant system when submitting.
BENEFITS OF SURGICAL GUIDES FROM IDD DENTAL LAB
Precise Transfer of the Digital Plan into Surgery
A surgical guide from iDD Dental Lab allows the surgical team to implement the digital implant plan with confidence. Rather than relying on freehand estimation in the theatre, the guide physically directs the drill to the pre-planned position, supporting a more predictable and protocol-driven surgical procedure.
Reduces Clinical Risk and Variability
A surgical guide constrains the drill path to the planned depth, angle, and position, reducing surgical variables — particularly valuable in cases involving limited bone volume or multiple implants.
Supports Efficient Surgical Workflow
A surgical guide supports a more efficient theatre workflow, helping surgical teams reduce chair time, minimise anaesthesia duration, and work consistently with global best practice guidelines for safe surgery.
Biocompatible and Safe for Intraoral Use
All surgical guides fabricated by iDD Dental Lab are produced from biocompatible dental resin materials that meet the requirements for intraoral use. The guide is designed to support a clean surgical environment, with infection control protocols followed throughout the manufacturing and dispatch process.
Reliable Turnaround for Planned Surgery Dates
iDD Dental Lab communicates turnaround times clearly at submission, allowing dental clinics and surgical teams to plan patient appointments and theatre scheduling with confidence. Consistent manufacturing standards mean clinics can rely on the quality and timing of each guide they receive.
Individual outcomes from guided implant surgery depend on clinical factors, bone conditions, and the skill and assessment of the treating surgeon. iDD Dental Lab provides the fabricated guide to the prescription and data submitted by the referring clinic.
SURGICAL GUIDE COST IN NEW ZEALAND
The cost of a surgical guide from iDD Dental Lab varies depending on the complexity of the case, the number of implant sites, and the implant system being used.
Factors such as whether the case involves a single implant or a full arch procedure, and whether additional digital planning support is required, will influence the overall fee. Costs vary based on individual case requirements and documentation provided at submission.
iDD Dental Lab does not list a standard fee, as each case is assessed individually to ensure the appropriate level of planning and fabrication is applied. Dental clinics and oral surgeons across NZ are encouraged to contact our team directly for a tailored quote. Payment terms are discussed at enquiry.
